Thousands Attend Pro-Palestine Rallies as Organisers Vow to Keep Protesting

Numerous individuals assembled in various Australian cities at pro-Palestinian protests, with organisers pledging to keep demonstrating after a ceasefire deal brokered by Donald Trump in Gaza seemed to be taking effect.

Sydney Demonstration Attracts Many Participants

In the harbor city, the pro-Palestine organization announced thirty thousand participants had demonstrated from Hyde Park to a nearby green space in the central business district after a planned rally to the Opera House was prohibited by the legal authorities in recent days.

NSW police assessed eight thousand participants joined the Sydney protest, with a official reporting there had been "no significant incidents".

Nationwide Demonstrations Mark Anniversary

Protests were also organized in Victoria's capital, Queensland's capital and Western Australian city on the weekend to remember 24 months of conflict after Hamas attacks on 7 October 2023 caused significant casualties in the neighboring country.

"In terms of the movement, we'll certainly maintain to advocate for liberation... for autonomy in the territory, for aid to be allowed in and for Palestinians to be able to rebuild Gaza," stated a coordinator.

Mixed Reactions to Truce Arrangement

Various participants shared confidence that the ceasefire would lead to lasting peace. Others were sceptical of Trump's involvement and encouraged participants to keep pressuring the federal leadership to sanction Israel and end the trade in military goods.

One protester, a Australian of Palestinian descent living in Sydney, expressed he wished the agreement would allow him to assist his senior relative, who is currently in the region without access to medical care, to his current home, and to locate and inter his sibling, his wife and their kids, who have been missing since 2023.

Local Jewish Population Holds Commemoration

Separately, thousands participated in a community remembrance on that night in Sydney's eastern suburbs to commemorate the two-year mark of 7 October. A participant, the brother of Galit Carbone, an national who was killed during the attacks, was arranged to talk.

Political Statements

The NSW Greens MP Jenny Leong informed attendees: "It's unacceptable to permit a world where Trump determines the outcome for Palestinian communities to be the nature of existence we tolerate."

Another organiser who submitted the original application to march on the Opera House claimed that the participants could have peacefully gone to the famous harbourside venue. The NSW police assistant commissioner had previously told the court of appeal that the arrangement appeared dangerous.

The organiser stated at the event: "On each occasion the authorities try to restrict our demonstrations or court proceedings, it wakes up a lot of people... to the need to mobilise and oppose such actions."
