Steven Gerrard under consideration for Rangers reappointment after Russell Martin is sacked.

Steven Gerrard is being strongly considered for a dramatic comeback to Rangers following the confirmed sacking of manager Russell Martin.

His disastrous Ibrox tenure ends

Martin's unsuccessful Ibrox tenure finished with the gaffer departing the Falkirk Stadium via a rear entrance and a pre-arranged transport after a level finish which left the Ibrox club 11 points from the summit of the premier division after just seven matches.

Incensed supporters had surrounded the squad transport in the stadium location, making their feelings clear.

Club hierarchy hesitant to dismiss Martin

The club directors had been reluctant to part with the coach, who was only appointed in June, despite loud protests from fans.

However, there was an understanding that the coach's position had become impossible.

The team have managed only one win of their Premiership matches to date, which has been coupled with poor showings on the continental stage.

Overall, the manager secured just five victories of 17 fixtures, with a lackluster, confused style of play that gained little support.

“While all transition periods take a while, results have fallen short of the team's standards,” stated a official communication on Sunday night.

“Number two the assistant, and senior coach Mike Williamson, will also be departing. Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their spell. We express gratitude for their work and hope for the best for the next chapter.”

Steven Gerrard won the title with the team

Gerrard claimed the league with the Ibrox side in the 2020-21 season, their sole title since 2011.

His work in the Scottish league before then, coupled with setbacks at the Birmingham club, creates uncertainty about his coaching abilities.

Yet he is greatly respected by the very set of fans the club desperately need back on side.

The reappointment of the Anfield legend, who last managed in Saudi Arabia, would be widely welcomed.

Gerrard will also be mindful of what scarce chances he has to be a head coach in top-tier competitions.

The departure will intensify scrutiny on the sporting director

The coaching change will intensify scrutiny on Thelwell, the Ibrox director.

He had been strongly in favor of the manager while publicly revealing a investment of twenty million pounds in the transfer window.

Martin had agreed to a multi-year agreement.

Martin's previous experience

The manager, who had previously been in charge the Dons and the Welsh club, led Southampton to a rise to the English football's elite in that year after being hired the previous summer.

He was dismissed last the end of the year after the the club managed only one win of their initial 16 matches.

He was named Barry Ferguson’s replacement in June, after the interim head coach had succeeded the sacked the former manager in the earlier part of the year.
