Russia Persistently Targeting UK Space Assets, Space Command Head Reports

Moscow is trying to disrupt British defense space systems frequently, as stated by the head of the British Space Command.

Maj Gen Paul Tedman disclosed that Russian forces were consistently attempting to interfere with British defense operations “weekly” and were closely monitoring the nation's orbital systems.

“We’re seeing UK space assets being jammed by Russian forces on a fairly regular basis,” he said.

The United Kingdom manages about six dedicated military satellites for communications and surveillance, which the general noted were equipped with counter-jamming technology.

He further stated: “They possess equipment on board that can see our satellites and are attempting to gather data from them.”

International Space Threats

The danger of orbital disruption extends beyond the UK. In September, the German defense minister, Boris Pistorius, revealed that Russia had been tracking two Intelsat satellites operated by the German armed forces.

“They are capable of disrupting, blind, control or kinetically disrupt satellites,” he stated at a orbital defense meeting in the German capital.

Cooperative Response

Reacting to growing international tensions, the United Kingdom and United States last month executed their first coordinated satellite manoeuvre in space, in what military leaders hailed as a significant advancement in international partnership.

During early September, a US satellite was relocated in orbit to examine a UK satellite and verify it was operating correctly. The test was part of Operation Olympic Defender, a joint military framework aimed at improving satellite defence and resilience.

“Expertly executed with US Space Command, I could not be more pleased or proud of the quick advancement we are achieving with our partners,” Tedman said.

Increasing Friction

The escalation in space occurs while tensions with Russia continue to rise.

The British foreign minister, Yvette Cooper, stated recently that the UK was prepared to respond after the US president, President Trump, openly encouraged NATO partners to shoot down encroaching Russian planes.

In a speech to the United Nations in last month, Cooper censured Russia's “provocative and reckless” incursions of Nato airspace in the past month, including incidents over Baltic nations, Eastern Europe and Southeastern Europe.
