Novak Djokovic Delivers Warning to Jannik Sinner: Suspension Will Follow Him Like a "Shadow"

Novak Djokovic has cautioned Jannik Sinner that his three-month ban for doping will linger over his career as a constant shadow – and raised doubts about the scheduling of the sanction in the previous season.

The Ban Explained

The Italian player served a three-month prohibition in early 2025 after the World Anti-Doping Agency approved his account that a prohibited performance-enhancing substance, clostebol, had entered his system accidentally.

"That cloud will follow him just as the Covid controversy will follow me, for the remainder of our respective careers," Djokovic stated in a discussion on a popular YouTube program.

"It's just something that, it was so significant, and when that happens, over time it will fade, but I believe it won't fully vanish. There's always going to be a certain group of people that will always try to bring that forward."

Djokovic's Perspective

Djokovic expressed belief that Sinner, his frequent training companion, "had no intentional involvement", but he then scrutinized how the Italian managed to complete his ban without missing a grand slam.

"There is the lack of transparency, the inconsistency, the convenient timing of the suspension coming between the slams, so he doesn't miss out the others – it's just it was very, very odd," he further commented.

Broader Tennis Community Response

"I really don't like how the situation was managed and it was evident so many other players, across both tours, who had comparable circumstances coming out in the media and asserting it represented favorable handling."
