Mount Everest Rescue In Progress as Snowstorm Strands Nearly 1,000 People
Rescue operations are actively underway on the world's tallest mountain following a intense blizzard that stranded nearly 1,000 individuals isolated at campsites on the east face of the summit.
Several Hundred Guided to Safety Amid Unusual Snowfall
Hundreds of trekkers stranded by the snowstorm near the east side of the peak were led to safety by rescue teams on Sunday, as exceptional snow and rain hit the Himalayas.
As of Sunday, three hundred and fifty individuals had reached the remote town of the rescue base, while communication had been made with the remaining 200-plus trekkers.
Holiday Rush Contributed to High Visitor Numbers
Visitors to the remote valley of the Karma valley, which leads to the eastern Kangshung face of Mount Everest, totaled several hundred this week, taking advantage of an eight-day National Day holiday in the region.
Heavy snow in the valley, which lies at an elevation averaging 4,200 metres (over 13,700 feet), started late Friday and continued throughout Saturday.
Continued Operations to Rescue Others to Safety
The remaining trekkers are scheduled to reach the safe zone in stages under the guidance and assistance of emergency teams organised by the regional authorities.
Many residents and rescue teams have been deployed to help remove snow blocking access to the region.
Uncertainty Over Local Guides and Other Areas
Estimates indicated that nearly 1,000 people had been trapped. Details were unclear whether support staff and other personnel with the trekking parties had been located.
Remains unknown if hikers near the north face of the mountain—also in the area—had been affected or not.
Peak Season and Access Suspended
The north face of Mount Everest, due to its convenient approach by roadway, often attracts many of tourists. This month is a busy period, when weather improves with the end of the Indian monsoon.
Ticket sales and access to the entire Everest scenic area were halted from the weekend, according to notices posted on local platforms.
Nearby Area Impacted by Heavy Rains
To the southern side of the region, torrential downpours triggered mudslides and sudden flooding that have blocked roads, washed away bridges, and claimed over forty-seven lives since Friday.
Thirty-five people died in multiple mudslides in the eastern Ilam district bordering India. Nine people were reported missing after being carried off by rising waters, and three more were fatally struck in lightning strikes in other parts of the nation.
