Doris Makes Irish Team While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Newly reappointed manager the Ireland coach has named skipper Caelan Doris in his Ireland squad for the autumn matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

Doris, absent from play since undergoing a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock McCarthy, however, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first British and Irish Lions match against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included because of fitness concerns, while full-back Keenan had already been ruled out after undergoing hip surgery following the Lions tour.

Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only uncapped member in the 34-man squad, but Irish rugby authorities says new provincial duo Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "cover".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team host the Brave Blossoms, the Wallabies and world champions the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"It's an exciting group to the squad and there's an opportunity for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented Farrell, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.

In a largely familiar-looking squad, Leinster's Sam Prendergast and the southern club's Jack Crowley will again compete for the first-choice fly-half position. The number 10 jersey is remains available, as the two players set to face off for the first time in the upcoming United Rugby Championship match at Croke Park.

Ciaran Frawley is the additional fly-half chosen with Farrell opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At number 9, Farrell has selected Lions tourist Jamison Gibson-Park and Casey, who led Ireland to the summer international victories over Georgia and the Lobos. Additionally, there is a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the youngster is also a frontrunner to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. The winger shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The front rower has been in a couple of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in Ireland A's loss by England in the English city previously.

McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer squad, yet did not receive a international appearance.

Southern province lock Ahern, who received his debut appearances in those matches, is kept in the squad, while veteran Northern province second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer matches.

Conan, who played in all three Lions Tests during the tour, is set to cover for the captain should the skipper does not regain fitness soon enough to face New Zealand.

The Ireland squad will assemble in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
