2026 is Poised to Be Hailed as the Era of the Croaking Craze.

While I found the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are legitimate amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this trend, I performed a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, focusing on games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's rising status in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the wave in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a fan favorite in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a host of unique mechanics.

Several the showcased games clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.

Should these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
